Wow -- it's been a pretty crazy cool night. Today, as most of you in the area will know, Toronto was hit by a pretty good-sized thunderstorm. At work, most of us were looking out the windows in awe. I stayed at work in hopes of trying to wait out the storm a bit (and also because my umbrella was IN the car -- yes, VERY convenient) only to find out as I was packing to leave that streets were flooded. No, not all streets but there were a lot of street closings due to flooding, which I've never seen happen before. I stayed at work for about 2 more hours before trying my luck again. On the way to my car, I walk over a bridge over a ravine we have out back. The surprising thing? The ravine is flooded! I took some [blurry] pictures on the camera phone but essentially what was once a tiny creek is now half the ravine. I hope the deer's okay :(
On the way home I'm looking at the street and see a guy walking around in bare feet and carrying his shoes. I thought it was odd because the streets were wet but not flooded in our parts. Then I look to the left of me and there's a lane of oncoming traffic that actually is flooded. The parking lot on the other side of the street too -- wow.
Every couple of intersections there was at least one stalled car. Nearer to my house there were a line of stalled cars and one getting towed out of a park off the side of the street. The park itself was a little lower than street level and was flooded.
Crazy stuff. Shortly after I got home, the power went out and we lived it out in the pre-electricity ages.....with my brother's PSP. lol. I've had a newfound liking for that device since the power outage :)
Pulse24.com has some good pictures of the city:
Very wet but calm after the storm
Flooded streets
Bathurst Street Flooding
Obviously some areas were more hard hit than others but hey -- when part of the DVP is closed down due to flooding brought on because the Don River overflows then yes, it's safe to say we had a lot of rain today. Oy.
It's kind of cool as a first-time thing for us but it also worries me a bit that we're getting weather like this, especially with tornado warnings :( Global warming in effect :(
